What to Do If You Smell a Propane Gas Leak

by Kathi Leidenon 17 October 2018in Propane Gas

As a leading supplier of wholesale propane fuel tanks, we want to make sure that our customers are prepared to safely handle the gases they purchase from us. This article will inform you on how to best detect and react to a propane leak.

Detecting the Leak

If you have ever been around a propane burner as it’s being lit, you have probably experienced an odor similar to the smell of rotten eggs. Propane gas itself actually has no odor, rather this smell is due to an additive Ethyl Mercaptan. It is added to the gas as a safety measure to allow you to detect a leak. The inclusion of Ethyl Mercaptan into propane gas is vital due to the danger involved with a propane leak. If a leak goes undetected people exposed to it risk suffocation. The ignition of a propane leak can also result in an explosion and/or fire.

What to Do After You Detect a Propane Leak

If you happen to smell a notable rotten-egg scent in or around your workplace or home, here are the steps you should immediately take:

  • If you have identified the location of the leak and conditions are safe to do so, turn off the main valve for the gas supply on your propane tank or pipeline. To close the valve, turn it clockwise (to the right).
  • If you cannot safely close the main valve, leave the building and surrounding area immediately and remove others from the area as well. Keep in mind that if you smell propane you should NOT strike any matches, light any candles, flip any switches, use a phone or any electrical equipment/appliances, lights, or elevators. The use of electronics around a propane leak increases the risk of ignition.
  • Report the leak by dialing 911 and then call your propane retailer. DO NOT use any phone within the building, including your cell phone.
  • Do not return to the building/area of the leak until the authorities inform you it is safe to do so.
  • Have your system checked by a professional to ensure it is safe and free of leaks before you attempt to use any appliance within the building.
  • Any repairs made to gas lines on your property must be done according to local regulations, by your propane company or other licensed professional.
